Rainbow

This summer I saw a lot of rainbows. This one was particularly memorable as it occurred right at sunset when everything else except the dark clouds in the sky was turning orange after an intense shower. The way it encircled the industrial cityscape reflecting the orange light of the setting sun was almost end-of-the-world-ly. Rainbows appear more circle (i.e., you can see more of an arc) when the height of the sun is lower, because the top of the rainbow is higher. So if you get up high enough, you might be able to see some rainbows continue below the horizon, but you might need to go away from the Earth’s surface. (Apparently, pilots can experience this view..!).

Another cherry season has come and gone
Posted on April 17, 2016 by proedit
This year, again, Kyoto did not disappoint with its beautiful cherry blossoms. It was chilly for a long time even in March so I anticipated the coming of cherry flowers to be late – I was wrong, and as a result ended up missing out on some of the most spectacular viewings! Here however I captured a light-up of a pretty full tree. The subtle pink against black background really symbolizes Japan’s spring beauty. The Japan Weather Association, which provides information on weather, disasters, and the environment in real-time, predicts cherry blossom schedules early in February for the first time, in the end of February for the second, and on every wednesday thereafter until the end of April (!). They claim the method of prediction to be unique, based on a formula that emphasizes the temperature course after fall of the previous year, as this appears to significantly affect the process of flower bud growth. For those who plan to time the visit, their information is worth checking.
